Introduction: Ashley Pena

 Hello everyone! My name is Ashley Pena Perez, I am 23 years old and currently live in Texas. I’m majoring in Justice with a minor foreign languages and I’m a senior here at UAF. I also lived in Alaska for four years beforehand and I’m originally from The Dominican Republic. I have a dog, her breed is Belgium Malinois and her name is Luna, she’s one year old. I really enjoy the outdoors and love spending time with family and friends and I also enjoy playing instruments, the piano to be exact. I currently work as a personal banker and I plan to go to law school in the future, possibly after I obtain my bachelors degree. 


I’ve taken an art course before a couple semesters ago and really enjoyed it though I’m not very artistic. I would say I’m more musically inclined and enjoy playing various instruments such as the drums and the piano. When I was in my art class I did draw a lot and painted a couple of times. We used ink, colored pencils, water paint and influenced our art by watching the outdoors. We used to inspire ourselves by just looking at things, people, objects, animals, etc. I do own some art which is hung up in my living room. One of my favorites is this painting of the mountains in Alaska during the summer time. It's quite beautiful. My mom actually used to be an artist and she studied art and design in college, I thought I'd enjoy art more like she does but I guess I like art in a different way. I don’t attend first Fridays and I also don’t go to museums in my free time but I think I would enjoy going to a museum or an art gallery. I really like the work of art below because it's very detailed and I can picture it happening in real life, as in I can picture myself being here and listening to the music on a cold, rainy fall day. The content that I decided to add to my first blog discusses the influence music has in art.

    The painting you featured is by Leonid Afremov. He broke all kinds of barriers by being one of the first artists to successfully sell prints of his paintings on the internet.

    Hi Ashley! It is great to meet you! Your background is so diverse, and it is fantastic that you love music and art. Even if you do not consider yourself very artistic, it is astonishing that you have explored different mediums and appreciate visual art in your way. Luna sounds like a fantastic companion, too! Best of luck with your studies and future law school plans—I am sure you will do great!

Art Analysis Post: Tamalada

 Culture has a huge impact and effect on many different paintings, sculptures and other works of art. It's fascinating to see how different cultures can be seen and felt through these works of art. The artwork below represents the culinary practice and cultural tradition of a community when making a very popular Mexican dish, tamales. The painting is based on her childhood growing up in the South Texas Mexican American community but it was created in San Francisco. It's so interesting how something as small as food can bring loved ones together, from different generations, to create beautiful memories and traditions.
